Unmeet / Leaving early
Most of the awkwardness of leaving early is decided before the meeting starts. Flag it in advance and it's scheduling. Announce it at minute forty and it's an excuse.
The short answer:
A message sent the day before does not read as an excuse. It reads as someone managing their calendar, and it gives the organiser something useful — the chance to reorder the agenda so your part happens while you're there.
This one sentence does more work than any in-meeting wording, because it converts your exit from an interruption into a plan.
Use the chat. Interrupting to announce your departure makes the whole room stop for something that concerns almost none of them.
Then go. Waiting for acknowledgement turns a statement into a request, and you can end up sitting there for another ten minutes.
If you're the host: hand the host role to someone before you go, or the meeting may end when you leave. In Zoom and Teams look for "make host" or "make presenter" in the participant list first.
If you leave the same meeting early every week, the problem isn't the exit — it's the invitation. Ask the organiser whether you're needed for the whole thing or only your section, and whether you can be dropped from the standing invite in favour of the notes. That conversation is usually much easier than people expect, because organisers rarely want passengers either.
Unmeet writes an excuse that fits your job, posts it in the chat, mutes you and leaves the call. macOS, for Teams, Zoom and Google Meet.
See how Unmeet worksBefore the meeting, not during it. One line — that you need to leave at a given time, and an offer to cover your part earlier — turns it into a scheduling detail rather than a request for permission.
Two sentences: that you're leaving, and what happens next. For example: 'Apologies all, I need to drop off for another commitment. I'll catch up on the notes and follow up on my part.'
Turn it off a minute or two beforehand. A dark tile disappearing is far less noticeable than a live face vanishing, and it signals you're wrapping up.
Pass the host role to someone else before you go, otherwise the meeting may end for everyone when you leave. Both Zoom and Teams let you promote another participant from the roster.
A short reason helps, a long one hurts. One clause is enough — the detail in a long explanation is what makes people wonder about it.
